{"id":751,"date":"2014-02-03T10:11:25","date_gmt":"2014-02-03T10:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/?p=751"},"modified":"2014-02-03T10:11:25","modified_gmt":"2014-02-03T10:11:25","slug":"what-not-to-do-on-your-social-media-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/what-not-to-do-on-your-social-media-site\/","title":{"rendered":"What NOT to do on your Social Media Site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all post things on the internet these days.\u00a0 Even those who disregard the popularity of traditional social media sites like Facebook or Myspace may very well still be using another site that could be easily traced back to them.\u00a0 Think for a moment about your internet use.\u00a0 Do you use the same \u201chandle\u201d online in multiple places?\u00a0 If someone knew that handle, could they find out a lot about you?\u00a0 Do you post on Reddit or any other user submission sites?\u00a0 What about asking questions of forums for PC repair or car maintenance?<\/p>\n<p>It is incredibly easy to forget where and what we say that can come back to us online.\u00a0 Now more than ever, employers are looking into your \u201conline presence\u201d to see how you portray yourself. Some businesses use this as part of their pre-employment process, and others use it during reviews.\u00a0 Organizations have even caught and fired employees on multiple occasions that were claiming sick, but then posted a \u201cselfie\u201d while at the big game.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t the only mistake you can make when posting online. Here are some common \u201cdo nots\u201d that may just save your job,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do Not:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Post pictures of yourself inebriated \u2013 If you ever end up applying for a family friendly organization that wants to keep a positive image, they will check for this sort of thing.\u00a0 Any images that depict you drinking, doing any drugs, or acting in poor taste may lose you a big opportunity.\u00a0 This goes for promotions as well.<\/li>\n<li>Brag online about breaking the law \u2013 If you break a law, however trivial, don\u2019t talk about it.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if you meant to or not, talking about it publically could possibly disqualify you from a handful of jobs in government or law offices.<\/li>\n<li>Post lewd pictures \u2013 You would think this is a given, but time and time again I have heard stories of someone\u2019s co-worker posting a picture of themselves on Facebook that left little to the imagination.\u00a0 Even if those images don\u2019t immediately reflect on the company\u2019s image, they will spread fast amongst coworkers and can cause a hostile work environment.<\/li>\n<li>Talk about controversial issues \u2013 Many people use online message boards and public Facebook posts to discuss and debate politics and beliefs.\u00a0 Although you can\u2019t be treated differently for any opinion you may hold (nor should you be) it still shows good tact to hold those conversations to private messages or in person.<\/li>\n<li>Complain about work \u2013 We have all been guilty of this at some point.\u00a0 Venting is healthy, but it doesn\u2019t mean you want a written record of it on the web.\u00a0 If the wrong person were to see it, and send it to your boss, you would be in a world of trouble.<\/li>\n<li>Pick on Co-Workers &#8211; Not only is it dumb, it is cruel. \u00a0A hostile comment or an embarrassing picture could become an HR issue very quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let us know what other &#8220;do nots&#8221; you have seen coworkers do in the comments!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all post things on the internet these days.\u00a0 Even [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[508],"tags":[447,1162,1163,450],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/751"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=751"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/751\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=751"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=751"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.poly.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=751"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
